RBT ready for larger ships

Rio Brasil Terminal (RBT) is ready to receive larger, higher-capacity container ships following the completion of dredging works on the main channel of the Port of Rio de Janeiro.

With an investment of BRL163 million, PortosRio – the port authority of Rio de Janeiro – has increased the minimum depth of the channel from 15 meters to 16.2 meters and raised the operational draft to 15.30 meters.

The deeper draft enables vessels with higher cargo volume to call the port, resulting in an estimated capacity increase of up to 700 TEUs per ship. Additionally, the new depth enables the safer navigation of larger vessels up to 367 meters in length and capacity of 15,000 TEUs. This development enhances the port’s competitiveness and ensures greater navigational safety.

Another key aspect of the dredging project is the upgrading of the nautical signals to allow vessels ranging from 349 to 367 meters in length to maneuver safely. These improvements further strengthen the Port of Rio de Janeiro’s position as one of Brazil’s leading logistics hubs, preparing it for the growing demands of global maritime trade.
