MIT, SPICT promote environmental awareness through outreach activities

Motukea International Terminal (MIT) and South Pacific International Container Terminal (SPICT) marked World Environment Day through environmental awareness activities that engaged schools, community groups and partner organizations in promoting climate action, environmental stewardship and sustainable waste management.

MIT led environmental awareness activities at Tatana Primary School and Baruni Primary School on June 2 and 4, engaging students, teachers, parents and community leaders in discussions on climate action and environmental stewardship.

In partnership with TotalEnergies EP PNG and Noho Mage Holdings Ltd. (NMHL), the activities focused on climate change, waste management, coastal and marine conservation, and sustainable environmental practices. Students participated through poster presentations and demonstrations that highlighted the impact of climate change and actions that can help protect the environment.

The activities concluded with the turnover of environmental support materials to the schools. TotalEnergies EP PNG donated tree seedlings, while MIT and NMHL provided cleaning equipment and wheelie bins to support waste management practices.

Meanwhile, SPICT conducted a two-week environmental awareness campaign, engaging local schools, community groups, and partner organizations in activities focused on environmental stewardship and sustainable waste management.

As part of the initiative, SPICT visited six elementary schools, providing wheelie bins, wheelbarrows, disposal bags, cleaning gloves and tree seedlings to support campus cleanup and greening efforts. The terminal also recognized Labu Miti Primary School for successfully maintaining 16 of the 20 seedlings donated by SPICT in 2025.

The program concluded with a World Environment Day celebration organized in partnership with the Ahi Foundation and Coca-Cola Europacific Partners PNG (CCEP PNG), featuring environmental awareness activities, the donation of 100 tree seedlings for community reforestation, and a beach cleanup at Wagang involving SPICT employees, volunteers, and community members.
