MIT spearheads mangrove conservation at Fairfax Harbour
Motukea International Terminal (MIT), in partnership with PNG Ports Corporation and TotalEnergies EP PNG Ltd., completed the second phase of a mangrove rehabilitation project with the planting of 500 mangrove seedlings at Fairfax Harbour in Port Moresby.
Volunteers worked under the scorching sun to complete project after the Motukea Mangrove Conservation and Rehabilitation Project signage was unveiled. The project, carried out under the tri-party Memorandum of Understanding signed in May 2024, highlights the group’s commitment to mitigate climate change and strengthen coastal protection. With more than 1,000 seedlings now planted across two phases, the project contributes to ensure a more sustainable environment for future generations.
Marvin Nalica, ICTSI South Pacific Head of HSSE, emphasized the importance of protecting Motukea’s coastline. He also noted that mangroves serve as natural defense against coastal erosion and climate impact. He also reaffirmed MIT’s commitment to invest in long-term sustainability initiatives.
Neil Papenfus, PNG Ports chief executive officer, and Abdul Qadir, TotalEnergies acting managing director, were also present during the activity.
