ICTSI lauds DOST prosthetics program

Engr. Marianito Margarito, DOST ITDI senior science research specialist

International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) recognized the Department of Science and Technology Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST ITDI) for advancing locally developed prosthetics research during the Manila Bulletin’s 126th anniversary celebration on January 23 at the Manila Hotel.

The institute received the 2026 Newsmaker of the Year Award for its work in developing accessible healthcare technologies and promoting locally driven engineering solutions.
DOST ITDI leads a research program on nanocomposite filaments for 3D printed prosthetic limbs, using locally sourced materials to produce affordable and customizable devices. It aims to lower production costs and broaden access to prosthetics manufactured in the country.

The program addresses cost barriers affecting an estimated 80 percent of Filipino amputees who lack access to conventional prosthetics, supporting wider availability through local production.

The research is led by Engineer Marianito Margarito, DOST ITDI senior science research specialist, who received the award during the ceremony attended by Philippine First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos as guest of honor.

Other Newsmakers of the Year honorees announced by Manila Bulletin include Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto and athletes Alex Eala, Miguel Tabuena and Kayla Sanchez.
The recognition reflects ICTSI's support for government led innovation programs that deliver social impact and strengthen national science and engineering capabilities.
