ICTSI Breakbulk group completes session on HSE

The ICTSI Breakbulk Focus Group recently concluded its third session, focusing on Health Safety and Environment (HSE).
With the theme HSE Matters!, the session was spearheaded by Lee Charles Wilson, Global HSSE consultant for Manila International Container Terminal, Manila Multipurpose Terminal (MMT), and NorthPort; Edmundo Trazo, ICTSI Global HSSE director; and Jennifer Olaer-Salazar, MMT HSE manager.
The opening remark was delivered by Phillip Marsham, who reiterated ICTSI’s firm commitment to HSE and ensuring a safe work environment through practical and risk-based performance measures.
Mr. Trazo started the session with a presentation on ICTSI’s global safety performance summary as of June 2024. Mr. Wilson followed with a discussion on general safety principles including risk assessment, use of personal protective equipment in operational areas, and ensuring efficient and precise communication during toolbox talks. He also stressed the need to highlight key pointers like workplace transport before commencing operations.
For her part, Ms. Olaer-Salazar discussed safety alert, providing details on two incidents that highlighted key learning indicators and factors affecting operational safety.
Mr. Trazo delivered the closing remarks and thanked all the participants for a very insightful session. He emphasized that while is no universal approach to breakbulk operations, there are common considerations that everybody can follow. He ended the session by reminding everyone that safety practices should be consistently reinforced through proper training, planning and risk assessment.
