International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) has joined Ocean Centres Philippines, a new initiative for stronger global maritime safety and sustainability.
Marvin Nalica, ICTSI global health, safety, security and environment coordinator, represented ICTSI in the July 10 launch hosted at the Asian Institute of Management in Makati. He underscored the importance of open dialogue in advancing shared maritime goals.
“Communication is key when it comes to this initiative. We should mainstream the conversation around ocean safety and sustainability so that it will leave a mark,” explained Nalica.
He added that the initiative offers an opportunity for industry players to adopt higher standards, innovate, and make port operations more sustainable.
Ocean Centres is a multi-stakeholder platform established by the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) in collaboration with the Lloyd’s Register Foundation. The initiative seeks to promote cooperation across maritime sectors in support of global ocean sustainability goals.
The Philippines is among seven pilot countries alongside Brazil, Ghana, Kenya, India, Bangladesh and Indonesia. The local launch was led by Global Compact Network Philippines (GCNP), the country network of UNGC.
Ports and shipping, where ICTSI is a major international player, is one of the initiative’s four focus areas. The others are fishing and agriculture, finance and investment, and offshore renewables.
