Gateway ports with ICTSI terminals make AJOT Top 100 list

Four ports hosting International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) operations were included in the American Journal of Transportation (AJOT) 2026 Top 100 Container Ports ranking: Manila, Philippines (No. 44); Durban, South Africa (No. 46); Manzanillo, Mexico (No. 54); and Melbourne, Australia (No. 61).

Combined, the four ports handled more than 16 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2025, based on AJOT data.

The ranking measures total throughput at the port level. ICTSI operates container terminals within each of the ranked ports.

Manila ranked highest among the four, handling 4.5 million TEUs in 2025. ICTSI operates Manila International Container Terminal, the country’s largest international container facility and the company’s flagship. Through Manila North Harbour Port Inc., ICTSI also holds a stake in NorthPort, the Philippines’ largest domestic port.

Durban placed 46th with 4.47 million TEUs. ICTSI operates Durban Container Terminal Pier 2 at the Port of Durban, South Africa’s largest container port. The port serves industrial, agricultural and commercial centers across South Africa and the wider Southern African region.

Manzanillo ranked 54th after handling 3.85 million TEUs in 2025. Through Contecon Manzanillo, ICTSI operates a container terminal at Mexico’s busiest port. Located on the country’s Pacific coast, the port serves manufacturing, distribution and consumer markets across Mexico and North America.

Melbourne ranked 61st with 3.39 million TEUs. ICTSI operates Victoria International Container Terminal at Webb Dock East within the Port of Melbourne, Australia’s largest container port. The facility serves Australia’s largest consumer market and handles both domestic and international cargo.

Unlike many of the world’s largest container hubs, which derive a significant share of their volume from transshipment cargo, Manila, Durban, Manzanillo and Melbourne primarily function as gateway ports, with cargo volumes driven by trade moving into and out of the economies they serve.

The AJOT ranking places ICTSI-operated terminals within major trade gateways across Asia, Africa, North America and Oceania. While ICTSI does not operate the ports in their entirety, its terminals play a key role in connecting local economies to global shipping networks.
