Contecon Manzanillo adds hybrid RTGs to equipment fleet

Hybrid RTGs being offloaded at CMSA

Contecon Manzanillo (CMSA) took delivery of three hybrid rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes in October, adding to the acquisitions made throughout the year and strengthening its infrastructure as part of the terminal’s ongoing Phase 3B expansion.

Manufactured by ZPMC, the hybrid RTG cranes enhance the terminal’s cargo-handling capability, productivity and customer service. The units represent a strategic investment aimed at supporting foreign trade and reinforcing the Port of Manzanillo’s position as a benchmark for efficiency and operational capacity in Mexico and Latin America.

The hybrid RTGs enable CMSA to reduce fuel consumption by up to 50 percent compared with conventional port equipment. This development forms part of the company’s broader effort to establish a modern and competitive terminal.

“The integration of these hybrid cranes, along with future equipment, marks a decisive step toward the port operation of the future,” said José Antonio Contreras, CMSA chief executive officer.

“We began studies on hybridization in 2023, which now allows us to operate fully equipped units. This allows us to reduce our fuel consumption and emissions by more than half while significantly increasing operational efficiency.

“This investment reflects our commitment to innovation and sustainability, aligned with the highest carbon-neutral standards,” Contreras added.

The hybrid RTG cranes feature technology that combines high-efficiency diesel engines with lithium batteries, aligning with CMSA’s environmental commitments and international standards such as the company’s ISO 14064 carbon-neutral certification.

In addition to their environmental benefits, the hybrid RTGs use an AI-assisted remote-control system that optimizes cargo movements, enhances operational safety and supports operator training and adaptation to new processes.
