Sol Medina, business development and implementation manager, and Fohodil Galeas, commercial director
Contecon Guayaquil S.A. (CGSA) outlined the advantages of special economic development zones (ZEDE) at the recent CCG Talks hosted by the Guayaquil Chamber of Commerce (CCG).
Commercial Director Fohodil Galeas and Business Development and Implementation Manager Sol Medina led the session titled The Potential of ZEDEs: Your Passport to Global Competitiveness. They explained how ZEDEs can support industrial growth, attract foreign investment, and enable international expansion. CGSA's free trade zone was presented as an example, with the following features:
- 15-hectare dedicated area
- Strategic location with direct access to Ecuador's main road network and the port terminal
- 24/7 security and access control
- Infrastructure and connectivity for port-related operations
The ZEDE model provides an integrated logistics solution that includes port operations, cargo handling, and inland logistics. This setup streamlines processes and strengthens supply chain efficiency.
Companies operating within the ZEDE also benefit from economic incentives, including:
- Exemption from the five percent Foreign Exchange Outflow Tax
- Suspension or exemption of tariffs and VAT on imports
- Eligibility for VAT credit
- Income tax exemption for five years, followed by a reduced 15 percent rate for the next six years
The session emphasized that the ZEDE serves as a platform for businesses to add value and expand operations. By aligning with CGSA's terminal services, the ZEDE model creates opportunities for local and international companies to scale in global markets.
