In January 2014 International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI), through its subsidiary ICTSI Cooperatif U.A., entered a joint venture agreement with La Societe De Gestion Immobiliere Lengo (SIMOBILE) to develop a container and general cargo terminal on the Congo River at Mbengu Matadi, Democratic Republic of the Congo. ICTSI and SIMOBILE established ICTSI DR Congo S.A. (IDRCSA) to build, manage and operate the Matadi Gateway Terminal (MGT). ICTSI is a 52% shareholder, Groupe Ledya 38% and SCTP (Gov. Representative 10%).
The terminal commenced operations initially with one berth in mid-2016 and at the end 2016 moved into full operation with the completion of the second berth. Each berth is 175m in length and annual terminal capacity is 175,000TEU and 350,000 tonnes of general cargo. A doubling of capacity is planned via the implementation of a Phase 2 development as demand warrants.
Matadi is one of three ports situated along the Congo River in the DRC and is the main import/export gateway for the whole of the DR Congo. The port is approximately 150 kilometres up-stream from the Atlantic Ocean.
The Matadi Gateway Terminal has realised a significant modernisation of port operations in the DR Congo and will in the near term benefit from the deepening of the Congo River – a project backed by ICTSI with the support of the DRC Government – in turn delivering efficiencies along the whole supply chain and especially in conjunction with serving the capital city of Kinshasa and its surrounding extensive hinterland, a market of more than 30 million people.
