In January 2014, International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) through subsidiary ICTSI Coӧperatif U.A., entered a joint venture with La Societe De Gestion Immobiliere Lengo (SIMOBILE) to develop a river port in Mbengu, Matadi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. ICTSI and SIMOBILE established ICTSI DR Congo S.A. (IDRCSA) to build, manage, and operate a new terminal along the bank of the Congo River in Matadi. ICTSI Coӧperatif owns 60 percent of IDRCSA, while SIMOBILE 40 percent.

Phase 1 of the port project consists of two berths with a length of 350 meters and is expected to be completed in 24 months.

Upon completion the river port will have an annual capacity of 120,000 TEUs and 350,000 metric tons of cargo. The port’s capacity will be increased by Phase 2 of the project. IDRCSA’s initial invest in the construction will amount to USD 12,500,000.

Matadi is one of three ports found along the Congo River. It is situated along the Congo River and is a major import and export point for the whole of DR Congo. The port is approximately 150 kilometers upstream from the Atlantic.

ICTSI and IDRCSA envision the port to become a modern and state-of-the-art port that will support and facilitate the country’s economic growth through trade.
